"Choice" Nutrition Tips

Crunches are a waste of time

Spot training does not work. The only way to get a true 6-pack is to combine a healthy diet with resistance training. Picture a mountain – its jagged beauty and sharp lines covered by a thick sheet of snow and ice. You can't see the rocks in detail until that snow and ice melt away – it's the same for the human body. As soon as you can get that layer of fat off by eating right and strength training, you will see those beautiful abs!

Don't be afraid to lift weights

Doing cardio alone is the slowest way to lose weight. It's all about resistance training and cardio put together. This will burn more calories faster, and also add much needed muscle to speed up metabolism. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat and very important for weight loss. Concentrate your workouts on the bigger muscle groups like the chest, back, gluteus, hamstrings and quadriceps.

Vary the intensity of your workouts

Alternating segments of high intensity efforts with easier efforts improves your aerobic capacity. Change it up. Trying another machine will work you muscles in different ways, eliminate boredom, improves your overall fitness and lessens the likelihood of repetitive-use-injuries. Try one workout a week on a different piece of equipment.

Try a class

Take a break from the gym and try a workout class. Check out a boot camp, kickboxing or yoga class for a muscle boost.

Be smart - read labels carefully

Some fat free products are loaded with sugar. Fat does not make you fat – SUGAR DOES!

Remember, what goes into your grocery cart will go into your tummy! Become familiar with Canada's Food Guide for healthy eating tips – read the labels and know what you are putting into your body. If you can't pronounce it, then you shouldn't be eating it.
